apophenic dreams.

"Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in a casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."

- C.S. Lewis

For those (like me) who are in need of and/or easily amused by lighthearted meta of our favorite duo in three of its recently popular adaptations. ;)

“I think you’ll find,” said a tall, thin Holmes with an aquiline nose, “that I am the original. Jeremy Brett played me from 1984 to 1994.” He turned. “Ah, Watson. What is the meaning of this summons?”
“Excuse me,” said a short, rather scruffy-looking Holmes in need of a shave, elbowing thin Holmes aside. “I’m sick and tired of people saying I’m too short to be the real Holmes. I was in a full-blown blockbuster movie, not some made-for-television nonsense. Just because I’m a tad shorter than the previous clichéd portrayal!” Thin Holmes sucked in an angry breath but scruffy Holmes overrode him. “I’ll take on any man who says I’m not the real Sherlock Holmes and believe me,” his smile was cold, “you don’t want to fight me.”
“Right,” said Watson, “I’ll just–” He ducked back into his office, grabbed the brandy bottle and took a swig, not bothering with the glass. Maybe this hadn’t been such a good plan, after all. He steeled himself and opened the door again.
A tall, younger man leaning against the wall in a long dark coat waved at him casually from across the room. “Hello Watson, this is fun. Sherlock Holmes at your service, and at least I can claim to be the only one not past my use-by date.” The other Holmeses glared at him. Gracious, he was tall, and with much longer hair. Watson craned up at him, mouth gaping. Young Holmes stared back at the other two Sherlocks impassively. “Despite being asexual myself, I at least know what being gay means, which I doubt either of you two do.”

So it seems like 2012 is The Year Of The Sherlockians/Holmesians.

Our beloved Great (And Only!) Consulting Detective and His Good Army Doctor will be returning to us in THREE adaptations: in BBC’s 2nd series, in Guy Ritchie’s 2nd movie, and now — surprisingly — in CBS’ first TV adaptation.

(Actually, there’s no confirmation yet as to when CBS will be airing its Sherlock series.  I’m guessing it won’t be too far in the future though, so 2012 is probably a decent estimate.  And the Ritchie movie will probably come out in my country in early 2012 because December 2011 is the season for the MMFF.)

.. Three adaptations, to be aired so close to one another.  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle must be so smug right now. :))

Watch out, you criminals! Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are on the prowl now more than ever!

Sherlock Holmes.
(I don’t remember who made this graphic. Please tell me if you know.)

I made this ages ago :)

I love how the the subtle differences in the same posture speak of how differently each character is.
RDJ’s leaning forward, more self-assured and aggressive and confident than the other two, eyebrows raised in subtle challenge.
Brett’s sitting up straight, the picture of elegance and quiet certainty, but whose face seems more weathered and drawn.
And Cumberbatch has his eyes closed, more lost in his own world and needing more of an anchor than the other two.
And yet all three of them are Sherlock Holmes. Just… different sides of him.

I… I have no excuse for this. At all.
OMG GET AWAY FROM MY BOYFRIEND—wait, there are so many of you.

Augghhh!!  Why do I love these multi-Holmes pics so much?  And poor little MF—his feet don’t even touch the floor!

Aw come on, BBC!Sherlock!  RDJ!Holmes and Granada!Holmes are merely doing what Sherlock Holmes(es) do best: to thoroughly study the interesting specimen that has caught the rare attention (and affection) of Sherlock Holmes, the interesting specimen being one Dr. John Watson. :3
See, Law!Watson and Granada!Watson know that it’s best to get it over with. ;)
Permalink Say what you will regarding the more recent adaptations of Holmes.  But you cannot deny the… visual pleasure these dangerously good-looking men bring to our screens. ;)

FS says: Ed looks so resigned here, and RDJ looks so like he may kill someone. And Law!Watson is totally striking a pose for the camera. Hee!

Sitting on top of everyone.
I rest my case. :3

I adore this so much, it’s not even possible.  Time is turning inside out.
MF’s nose and BC’s eyes.  And then the expressions.
RDJ—why am I on the bottom?
BC—Don’t muss my coat of awesome.
JB—Quiet, I’m being the best Holmes.
DB—I’ll just stay here, like I always do.
MF—Why am I here and why are we pig-piling?
JL—They don’t call me Hotson for nothing.  I played Bosie once, you know.

Reblogging because of the awesome comment: “They don’t call me Hotson for nothing.”
